Different World

January 12, 2009

Yesterday, January 11, I installed Ubuntu Linux through Wubi. It was a simple exprience. I just had to run the installer, fire it up, restart into Ubuntu, and once it was done, just went back into Ubuntu, logged in, and It was a fresh install. No black screen. It was already connected to the network. I fired up Firefox to check my mail, and bingo, it was connected. The best part is that it kept Vista because I am a hobbist developer.

Any recommendations for a Linux blogging tool like Live Wrter?

I hate WordPress 2.7

December 5, 2008

Well the ability to hide crap works good. But the reorganization was a deorganisation. The UI is a jumble of different styled icons, with the polldaddy and upgrades. The icons without them look somewhat pretty. But WP is slowwwwwwwwww! The custom buttons look awful and the combobox up there is a dumb place to put it. The tabs I use to switch dashboards is also gone.

I dub WordPress 2.7 the Windows Me of blogs.

Why the cloud cannot replace the Operating System

November 9, 2008

Dumb Terminals, which lived off of the Internet, had an Operating System installed locally. With the cloud, what is powering it? Operating Systems. What is there to make the computer to do something? Operating Systems!

Do you like the new WordPress 2.7 dashboard?

Mostly a chance to play with PollDaddy, but the WP team can see if we like the new version.

Internet downtime

October 3, 2008

I’m having some problem with connecting to the net – it’s fixed – for now. But the phones are all staticky.

Ultra 1337 haX0rs hack userstyles.org

October 1, 2008

It’s awful. The domain itself has been replaced by a GoDaddy parking page. But the IP is working fine. http://74.63.3.217/ (that’s the one.) It’s a DNS hack. I have a feeling it’s not even legit, as it may be a phishing scam.

Edit: No haX0rs, just a sporadic DNS.

Mozilla Thunderbird and Windows Live Mail: definition of bloat

September 27, 2008

Software spoils. But Mozilla Thunderbird and Windows Live Mail actually fulfill Letts’ law, Zawinski’s law and Furrygoats’s law at the same time.

Letts’ Law: All programs evolve until they can send email.

Zawinski’s Law: Every program attempts to expand until it can read mail.

Furrygoat’s Law: Every program attempts to expand until it can read RSS feeds.

Is there a Feeds button in WLM? Oh yes! In TB? Check the new account button and click “RSS News and Blogs.”

Can they create mail? Yep. Just click “New Message.”

Receive? Click “Send and Receive” or “Get Mail.”

No, that’s bloat.

Google Chrome: The review

September 7, 2008

Google has a new browser called Chrome, and I thought I should review it. (since it’s spreading like wildfire)

image

(notice I use Windows Classic, so on Aero, it would have the Aero frame)

The UI is dead simple, and somewhat similar to IE7. A clean blue is the predominate colour in Chrome. (you can change it here or here)

image

It passes Acid2.

image

It has the I’m feeling lucky, Google (or the search engine of your choice) Search, Search this site, and more in the Omnibox.

image

The task manager in Chrome lets you kill threads, such as Chrome itself, tabs, and plug-ins.

image

Incognito mode, with the little sheriff, is akin to InPrivate in IE, and private browsing in Safari. (it lets you browse without the history and cache)

image

A maximized window.

image

The inspector came straight outta’ Safari.

image

The options dialog.

image

Even though it’s a Google browser, you don’t have use Google Search (already mentioned,  but this is image proof)

image

The find dialog to the top right.

image

The minimalist status bubble in the right is a fading, compact status bar to the bottom left.

image

Google Gears websites get Prism like windows which are spawn from shortcuts generated from this dialog.

image

The download dialog. History gets a similar one to. You can also access bookmarks from Ctrl+B. (not shown)

image

Dragging tabs out and in tabs.

gchrome-webapps

Webapps running from the new shortcut dialog.

image image

Chrome on Aero. (also shown is incognito on Aero)

image

And finally, the about dialog.

But, the question is, should you use it?

If you’re sick of IE, Firefox, Opera, Safari, and other browsers, try it. You might like it.

4 out of 5 Stars. (****)

NOTE: If you have any problems, please check Matt’s comment.
